Lithuania's SoMin: youth unemployment is decreasing, but deeper involvement of employers is necessary
During the last three years youth unemployment in the country was reduced
from 32.6 to 20.4%, however, it is necessary to continue taking all the
measures, particularly integration ones, to improve this indicator, says
Minister of Social Security and Labour of Lithuania Algimanta Pabedinskiene,
informs LETA/ELTA.
The minister also says that to solve youth
unemployment a more active involvement of employers is necessary.
On
Tuesday, the minister of social security and labour participated in a forum on
effectiveness and competitiveness of the Lithuanian higher education. During the
forum, the minister and representatives of education and business discussed the
responsiveness of higher education to labour market needs and the role of
employers in preparing highly qualified professionals.
The minister
turned attention to the recent trend when more and more people after graduation
from universities register in labour exchange offices and some of them even
fundamentally change their qualifications by attending vocational
schools.
"To reduce youth unemployment substantially it is necessary to
solve the issue of incompliance between higher education system and employers'
needs instead of fighting against the consequences," said
Pabedinskiene.
From 1 January 2014 to 1 May 2014, 31,000 young jobseekers
were registered in territorial labour exchanges. 8,500 young people were
employed.
