Uttar Pradesh plans autonomous board for vocational education

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government will set up a vocational education and training board to streamline employment-oriented education from class VIII.

The proposed board would formulate norms and grant affiliation to model vocational schools and organisations imparting professional education and training, besides providing guidance and counselling, an official spokesman said here.

Principal secretary of vocational and technical education department will be the chairman of the autonomous body. The cabinet today approved its setting up.

"The board will provide job-oriented vocational training to students from class eight to intermediate levels to meet the demand for skilled labour," he said. It will also prepare curriculum of various modular courses, conduct examinations and issue certificates.

The board, with elected and nominated members, would be operational from next academic year and any one above 14 years of age can enroll in vocational education institutions affiliated with the board. The cabinet also approved a proposal regarding vocational training and certification for skilled labour.

Training programmes of various departments would be considered as certified courses through registered vocational training provider.

Once the notification is issued, it would be mandatory for all contractors to get their unskilled workers trained within a year and obtain certificates from the department concerned.
