Egypt to establish 17 technological universities during 2024: minister

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ayman Ashour announced on Friday that Egypt plans to establish 17 new technological universities, during 2024.

There will be a technological university in every governorate across Egypt, he added,as the educational system of technological universities produces cadres needed by various development sectors across the nation.

Ashour added that the system of private universities emanating from public universities will be completed, in light of the state's ambitious plan to establish a private university affiliated with every public university in Egypt.

These universities will offer new academic programs and specializations needed by the labor market, in addition to interdisciplinary specializations, he said, to keep pace with contemporary global trends in this direction.

Ashour also noted the increase in universities within a short period, with Egypt now having 94 universities instead of 48 back in 2014.

The minister explained that new branches of internationally classified foreign universities will continue to be established.

This comes to provide foreign education opportunities in Egypt, working side by side with the current system – which currently consists of nine branches for foreign universities, providing educational services corresponding to what the mother universities provide.

And Egypt will continue implementing its ambitious plan to develop academic programs in public universities, he said, by adding new programs, developing academic regulations for existing programs, and focusing on inter-programs in public universities, alongside continuing to develop digital services for public universities.

The official spokesperson for the ministry, Adel Abdel-Ghaffar, explained that the plan aims to follow up on the national strategy for higher education and scientific research in all its paths and principles, and to modernize the legislation related to the higher education and scientific research system – thereby encouraging investments in higher education and scientific research.

He pointed out that the plan includes continuing to develop the digital performance of higher education and scientific research institutions in Egypt, by responding to the state’s goals and policy on this matter.
