Emiratisation program a priority for UAE private sector

With 2013 being declared the Year of Emiratisation, companies in the private sector taking part in the Careers UAE Exhibition 2013 said they are looking to increase the number of UAE nationals in their work force.

A popular online job portal participating at the career exhibition also stated that 67 per cent of companies in the UAE are looking to hire in 2013.

With UAE nationals accounting for 15 per cent of the total work force at Majid Al Futtaim, a leading shopping mall, retail and leisure pioneer, Ebrahim Al Hashemi, Associate Director of Employee Services, said they are looking to hire more Emiratis who want to join the private sector.

"We are looking for nationals to join us and we have a clear programme in our agenda for them and several positions to fill," he said, pointing out that there is an increase in the number of Emiratis working in higher positions.

Another private company, the Jumeirah Group, said Emiratisation is a top priority at the career fair. Providing candidates with the opportunity to engage in face-to-face interviews at the stall, senior management and Emirati representatives from different departments of the hospitality company will also be available for inquiries. The Jumeirah Group is also continuing the National Development Management Programme which was launched three years ago as an initiative to educate and train Emiratis to become future leaders in this sector.

With the Emiratisation programme under way, the Labour Ministry is aiming to increase the number of Emiratis working in the private sector which currently amounts to 22,000 workers out of the UAE's 225,000 national workforce.

More Emiratis open to joining private sector

Previously, Emiratis sought jobs in the public sector, but now many are open to joining companies in the private sector to gain international training and experience.

Gulf News talked to Emirati job-seekers visiting the Careers UAE exhibition 2013 about their preferences in the job market.

Twenty-two -year-old Amnah Al Salasi who is searching for an administrative job, explained that while public jobs were previously more appealing to Emirati youth, private companies are now attracting many fresh graduates by subsidising job benefits and offering international experience.

"We are not thinking about less working hours any more, private companies are interested in the Emiratisation programme so we have more opportunity, whereas public companies are looking for people with experience," said the 22-year-old.

Also, looking into the job market before graduation, student Fatima Yousuf said that she is more interested in joining semi-private and private companies when looking for a job. "I'm looking to join private companies because the jobs are more flexible, there's a bigger variety and there are more jobs available in the private sector," she said.
