    Corporate Profile

The Research Institute for Water and Waste Management at the RWTH Aachen (FiW) e. V., founded in 1979, works as an independent institute at the RWTH Aachen University. With the aim of application-oriented research, development and consultant services, the FiW develops long term strategies and innovative methods in the fields of climate change adaptation, water and waste management.

The FiW team works in an interdisciplinary team. It consists of research assistants from the fields of civil engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, waste management, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, economic geography, land-use planning and biology, grafic art and design, as well as experienced technicians and administrative staff. The team is complemented by student assistants and trainees in the fields of office communication and information technology for system integration.

As a research institute at the RWTH Aachen University, FiW emphasizes applied research and solutions of practical problems; about a quarter of the performance is done in international cooperation projects.

FiW is closely connected to the RWTH Aachen University, which offers the institute the best preconditions to develop interdisciplinary problem-solutions in the field of waste water and waste management. Furthermore FiW works in close cooperation with the Institute and Chair of Environmental Engineering of RWTH Aachen University (ISA) and the Development and Assessment Institute in Waste Water Technology at RWTH Aachen University (PIA). The three institutes work together as "acwa - Aachen water".

In our day-to-day work, we develop and optimize environmentally sound and efficient waste water treatment processes and waste recycling, treatment and disposal concepts. Hence, we have a solid network of waste water and waste management companies to present strategies and course of actions in the waste water and waste sector.

In this training course, treatment principles and related theoretical knowledge, taught in in-door sessions, are complemented by practical visits and group works at field trips to several management companies (municipal and private) in Germany.
