China looks to invest in future by modernizing vocational learning

In China, vocational colleges aim to teach students professional skills to help them find jobs. So it's important for students to get as much practical training as possible in their three years of study. But finding suitable work is not always easy.

In recent years, vocational colleges in central China's Henan province have increased efforts to find students' work.

Wang Huaguo, Director of Development and Cooperation Department of Mechanical and Electrical Vocational College said, "We cooperate with many enterprises. We put our classrooms and dorms into their factories or they build new factories onto our campus. So our students can easily apply what they learn in the classroom."

Fifteen institutions in Henan Mechanical and Electrical Vocational College now work with enterprises that need a large labor force, with professional skills. Skilled workers are hired as teachers. This means students don't have to rely on the lab for practical skills any more, but get real training on the factory floor instead.

Gong Shansong, from Haoxiangni Jujube CO., Ltd, said, "After the students graduate, they get a vocational certificate from us. It'll be easier for them to find a job. They can either choose to stay and work in our company, or choose other companies."

Vocational schools contribute more than 70 percent of new workers in Chinese manufacturing and other emerging industries. But professional workers are still in high demand.

And China is increasing its efforts to attract more and more people to vocational education by investing ample resources it.

Ren Yuan from Education Department of Henan Province said, "We're trying to increase student enrollment by encouraging more high school graduates, military veterans, laid-off workers, as well as migrant workers, to apply for the schools. We provide a convenient environment for the colleges and enterprises to cooperate with each other."

By 2022, China says, a total of fifty advanced vocational schools and 300 high-level professional training bases will be established.
