Latvian EU Presidency continues work on VET cooperation

Vocational education and training (VET) has found its way into the European Union (EU) Presidency priorities once again. The Latvian EU Presidency stresses in its programme that it 'will continue working on enhanced cooperation in vocational education and training, having regard to both previous achievements and current and future challenges.'

It promises to facilitate discussions on the future of VET and aims to strengthen cooperation among 'EU Member States, candidate countries, EEA (European Economic Area) member countries and social partners to ensure that education systems are able to provide people with the skills and competences they need to be able to succeed in the labour market.'

More generally, the Presidency intends to 'strengthen the important role of education and training in promoting economic growth, investments and well-being.'

It plans to strengthen the education agenda in the context of the Europe 2020 strategy through developing a closer link between Europe 2020 and the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training (ET 2020).

Improving the situation of youth employment is also a continuing priority, with the first results of the youth guarantee and the enhanced cooperation of public employment services on the Presidency's agenda.
