Vocational training enrolment in UAE is low, study reveals

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) need to focus on vocational training, a field that has been neglected since the 1980s, according to Dr Ayoub Kazim, managing director of Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) and Dubai Knowledge Village.

A study highlighted on the sidelines of the Gulf Educational Supplies and Solutions Exhibition and Gulf Education Forum, found that the enrolment rate of technical and vocational training was less than three per cent. This is significantly lower than the global average of ten per cent.

Kaltham Kenaid, Head of Research at the Knowledge of Human and Development Authority, said social misperceptions are the main cause.

"In the past, vocational training facilities were thought of as a place where school failures end up. The perception here is that you have to have a university degree to get a job," said Kaltham.

Kazim said this is an important issue that should be top of the country's agenda. "In the 1980s the UAE focused on vocational training, but now there is a lack of educators in the field. I believe that demand is starting to increase among students and we should support it and encourage it."
